Richard Carlson in his book, Don't Sweat The Small Stuff...and it's all small stuff, has a chapter on "Redefining a 'Meaningful Accomplishment' ". In that chapter he makes this statement
"I think of my most meaningful accomplishments as stemming from inside myself Was I kind to myself and others? Did I overreact to a challenge, or was I calm and collected? Am I happy? Did I hold on to anger or was I able to let go and move on? Was I too stubborn? Did I forgive? These questions, and others like them, remind us that the true measure of our success comes not from what we do, but from who we are and how much love we have in our hearts."
Jesus was equally concerned about ensuring that our focus be upon that which is truly important & meaningful. It seemed that He was forever butting heads with people within the religious establishment who were putting a greater emphasis & importance on doing the externals. They excelled at taking care of the "outer" while, unfortunately, neglecting the truly more important elements, those things that involve the "heart". For example, Jesus shares with these religious leaders such things as
"You're honouring me with your lips but your heart is far from me. Yes, I am aware that you are performing your routine rituals and attending regularly the services. But, unfortunately while you think you are worshiping Me, you really are not. It's lip service only that you are giving to Me!"
(Mark 71-23)
Then Jesus defines what makes a person "clean" or "unclean"
"For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance, and folly. All these evils come from inside and make a man unclean."
(Mark 721,22)
Carlson then puts forward this challenge "Rather than being consumed exclusively with external accomplishments, try putting more emphasis on what's really important. When you redefine what it means to achieve a meaningful accomplishment, it helps you to stay on your path."
It is my opinion that the journey to redefining what it means to achieve a meaningful accomplishment begins in opening the "gate" of one's life and "inviting" Jesus to share His life with us. Over the years, millions of people have discovered the peace & the joy & the love that He releases within us as we open our hearts up to Him. We will never experience the intimacy that He wishes for us to experience with Him if we are not willing to take this initial step of faith extending a personal invitation to Christ to have Him share His life with us! If you have never done that, why not take a few moments right now and give Him a welcome into your life, into your home! When you have done that, then share with someone immediately your discovery!
