| February 24, 2003 | LIFE'S CHOICES |
Life is all about making choices/decisions. But what will determine our choices? We can let circumstances and situations determine our choices. It is true that circumstances and situations will have its impact upon us, for better or for worse. But it is equally true that it is still our decision as to how we will respond to those circumstances. I am never a victim of the "outside world" unless I allow myself to become one. If that be the case, then what can a person do to safeguard oneself from developing a "victim" mentality? First, know where you want to go! Your life is like a compass. With your destination clearly identified, set your compass accordingly. Second, learn to trust in the accuracy of your compass. There may be times when it may "feel" you are going in the wrong direction. Especially when you notice vast multitudes of people going in another direction. Keep checking the compass while focused on your destination! Don't become easily persuaded by what you see others do, or what your feelings are telling you. I'm reminded of the words of Jesus in Matthew 7:13,14:
"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."
I'm also reminded of another story in the Bible (Matthew 14:25-31). It is the story of Jesus walking on the water.
"During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. 'It's a ghost,' they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: 'Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid.' 'Lord if it's you,' Peter replied, 'tell me to come to you on the water.' 'Come,' he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, 'Lord, save me!' Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. 'You of little faith,' he said, 'why did you doubt?'
