July 16, 2006 Creating Conditions That Make a Difference in People's Lives

Part 2 - The Importance of Everyday Heroes

This is the second in a series of articles on creating conditions to make a difference.  Today's article will focus on the second condition that I believe will make a difference in people's lives.

  1. Heroes - The Importance of Everyday Heroes!
In our fast paced, media-driven society, we often forget how heroes can and do make a difference in our lives. Heroes will often inspire us to excel. Many have had a positive impact on our attitudes and our lives. Heroes are individuals we can connect with; they are people who listen to, and value, our ideas. Heroes believe in who we are and who we can become, even when we are not sure ourselves that we can reach our goals. Everyone can benefit from having heroes in their lives, because having heroes builds trust in others and belief in oneself. Some questions we can ask ourselves regarding heroes:

    1. How am I a role model?

    2. What can I do or say to let the people who are in my life know that I am there for them and that I will support them when they need someone?

    3. What can I do that will encourage others to be positive role roles?

We all have heroes in our lives, but we often forget to recognize them and the strong influence they have on us. We also forget that we, too, may be heroes —whether or not the people who see us in that role tell us that we are.

Remember: You are here to make a difference!
