Eight Conditions That Make a Difference

Part 1 - The Importance of Belonging

Introduction:
The next couple of articles will be about 'making a difference'.  When Jesus began His public ministry, the Bible reports that some of His first words to His disciples were, in effect, "You are on earth to make a difference."  In Matthew 5, Jesus says to His followers, "Let me tell you why you are here. You're here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavours of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You've lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage."  Here's another way to put it:

You're here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We're going public with this, as public as a city on a hill.  If I make you light-bearers, you don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting you on a light stand.  Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.
(Matthew 5:13-16 - The Message)

Today's article will focus on the first condition that I believe will make a difference in people's lives.

  1. Belonging - The Importance of Belonging!
Studies have show that when infants enter this world in an atmosphere of feeling 'welcomed & wanted', it has had a very positive affect upon them throughout their life. Further studies have confirmed that a sense of belonging affirms the value for who we and the unique talents that we bring into the world. It provides a sense of connection and support. Just being introduced to and welcomed by new friends, co-workers, students, etc., gives us that wonderful sense of being 'connected' to others. Having people 'talk' to us in constructive ways also makes one feel 'accepted & connected'. I have known many people who have said how as a result of experiencing that sense of belonging it has stimulated their motivation, causing them to feel inspired to do their best.

Remember: You are here to make a difference!
