The counsellor at the centre, Mr. Bill Keyes, has counselling experience dating from 1981. Upon completion of 500 hours training through an internship with Burden Bearers of Canada, his counselling began in Williams Lake and later expanded to 100 Mile House, Quesnel and Hazelton. His academic training included taking workshops and seminars from such well respected Christian authorities as Dr. Gary Collins, Dr. Norman Wright and Dr. Lawrence Crabb.
In addition to valuable field counselling experience since that time, Bill has:
- an undergraduate degree in Christian Studies from Regent College, Vancouver
- a Masters degree in Christian Studies from Regent College
In Bill's own words, here are some comments about counselling.
"Since the early 1980's, I have had the opportunity of working with hundreds of people as a qualified counsellor. One of my more remarkable discoveries is knowing how many people there are who are in need to talk to someone that would really listen to them! Counselling training is important and a necessity. As a result, I am periodically attending workshops & seminars for the purpose of learning new ideas & ways to becoming more effective as a counsellor. But equally important is the capacity that a counsellor has in providing a compassionate, accepting, respectful and empathetic ear to that hurting person. It is an awesome experience to witness how powerful and life transforming it can be to listen to someone so as to truly be able to understand them. Then to affirm them as being truly significant and worthwhile will often touch them in such a non-threatening way that they will begin talking about things which they may have hidden away, possibly for years, out of either fear or shame. What an exciting privilege it is to be used by God to answer the cry of the human heart as they seek to be re-connected in their various relationships. Through patience and gentleness on the part of the counsellor and trust and willingness on the part of the client, I have seen amazing changes occur in the lives of my clients. We have all known people who have been deeply hurt and how they tend to hide the real me deep inside themselves. They then wait to see if it is safe to let the real me out. Caring, gentleness and understanding will often provide safety for the client to connect. The client needs to feel a good sense of connection to be able to let the counsellor discover the real me which has been in hiding out of fear of being hurt again, but longing to be released from the fear and be discovered and affirmed that they are still ok."
"People have asked me, 'Who comes for counselling'? My answer, 'People from all economic, professional and social walks of life'! People seek professional help for various reasons, but basically for many it is because some of their deeper needs have not been resolved in satisfactory ways and they have not given up hope that they can find help."For more information about counselling, or about the Hillside Community Counselling Centre,
